SSI benefits are available to people who are disabled but have not paid enough in to Social Security to qualify for Disability benefits. In addition, income and asset limits apply. A single person, for example, can have no more than about $700 per month in income and $2000 in assets to qualify for SSI. Attorneys cannot assist in filing SSI claims. However, once an SSI claim is denied, an attorney can file an appeal and represent a claimant at a hearing.
